The 11th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS + IATSE Local 706) awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday night celebrated the excellence in make-up and hairstyling across various productions.
The evening commenced with the presentation of honoree awards. Annette Bening, the Oscar-nominated actor, received the Distinguished Artisan award, accepted on her behalf by Diana Nyad due to COVID restrictions.
Michael Westmore was honored with the Vanguard Award for his distinguished work on iconic films such as Rocky, Star Trek, Mask, and Raging Bull. Additionally, Kevin Haney was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to films like Driving Miss Daisy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Hocus Pocus 2.
However, the ceremony was not without its share of unexpected moments. During the announcement of winners for daytime TV, an envelope mix-up led to confusion as the winners for hairstyling were announced instead of makeup. Despite the chaotic moment, the show continued, with Melissa Peterman attempting to entertain the crowd amid the confusion.
Further mishaps ensued during the best special effects category, where a presenter initially announced a tie, only to retract the statement later, acknowledging it as a mistake.
Among the notable winners of the evening were Ivana Primorac and the hairstyling team of Barbie, recognized for their excellence in period hair styling and/or character hair styling. In the TV category, prosthetics designer Barrie Gower was awarded for best special makeup effects for his work on The Last of Us. Other winners in the television category included Dancing With the Stars, The Morning Show, and Saturday Night Live.
Maestro, directed by Bradley Cooper and featuring the prosthetic makeup design by Kazu Hiro, stood out at the awards. Nominated for three awards, Maestro came away with two wins, solidifying its position as a strong contender for the upcoming Oscars on March 10.
Notably, Hiro’s transformative work on Cooper, depicting legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, impressed audiences with its meticulous attention to detail and gradual aging process.
Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn also received recognition from the guild for its hairstyling and makeup in contemporary categories, despite not being nominated for an Oscar. Full list of winners below:
