January 2023 surpasses January 2022 at B.O.

January 2022’s box office numbers are more than double last year’s earnings with the total box office for all movies this weekend at approximately $75M compared to only $35.8M for the same weekend in 2022. 

Best Picture Oscar nominee Avatar: The Way of Water took the #1 spot for its seventh weekend in a row since it premiered and James Cameron’s film stands at $620 million domestic, $2.117 billion total worldwide.

Best Animated Feature Nominee Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is still at #2 after premiering 6 weeks ago and it is also currently available on premium video on demand. A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks, did not receive any Academy Award nominations, but still moved up the list from #5 to #3 after 5 weeks earning $6,750,000 million in 3,957 theaters due to its appeal to older audiences. 

Universal’s M3GAN finished in 4th place, with a gross of $6.4M and a drop of 34%. The PG13 horror hit is the number one Domestic grossing movie to open in 2023, with $82.2M to date.

The high-octane Bollywood thriller starring Shah Rukh Khan and John Abrams Pathaan from Yash Raj Films finished the weekend in 5th place, earning $5.9M at only 695 locations. The film has excellent reviews from both critics and audiences with a critics score of 87% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 82%. 

Sony’s Missing dropped from #4 to #6 in its second week at the box office and Lionsgate’s Plane dropped just one spot from #6 to #7 in its 6th week in theaters. 

Newcomers Infinity Pool, Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist, and The Wandering Earth II rounded out the top ten list in that order. Neon’s Infinity Pool is fresh from Sundance and Brandon Cronenberg’s film earned $2,725,000 in its opening weekend. Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist earned $2,362,000 and China’s blockbuster The Wandering Earth II earned $1,355,000.
