James Gunn has revealed his post-Superman feature: Man of Tomorrow, flying into theaters July 9, 2027.
The filmmaker announced on Instagram, pairing it with new art from DC’s Jim Lee, which shows Lex Luthor in his green-and-purple power armor—while Superman leans against it with a sly grin, a screwdriver in hand. The armor has been a staple in comics and animation for decades, but has never appeared in live-action.
Gunn has been teasing for weeks that the film isn’t a direct Superman sequel, but another installment in what he’s calling his Superman Saga, featuring characters audiences already met in this summer’s hit.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Peacemaker premiere, Gunn said he’d finished a treatment for the next story and hoped to head into production “not too far away.” Plot details are under wraps. While the 2020 animated movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow drew inspiration from the 2003 miniseries Superman: Birthright, Gunn hasn’t indicated any direct connection.
The announcement lands as DC Studios gears up for Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl on June 26, 2026, and James Watkins’ horror-thriller Clayface on September 11, 2026.
Gunn’s Superman introduced David Corenswet (Clark Kent), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), alongside heroes like Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced).
The film has grossed $611.6 million worldwide, the year’s top comic-book performer—solid business in a tougher superhero market compared to earlier eras (2013’s Man of Steel finished at about $670 million worldwide).
Superman ended with Luthor in custody and in tears. With Jim Lee’s image hinting at an armored return—and Superman’s unexpectedly friendly stance—fans are already speculating: a rematch, an uneasy alliance, or something stranger when Man of Tomorrow lands in 2027?
