James Gunn finds his Brainiac for Superman sequel

Brainiac Lars

Kal-El now has a new nemesis. Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios have officially tapped acclaimed German actor Lars Eidinger to play Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated follow-up to Superman.

The casting marks the first time the iconic Superman villain will appear in a live-action feature film, as DC continues to build its new cinematic universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Eidinger, celebrated for his intense and unpredictable work across European cinema and international television, steps into the role of one of Superman’s most cerebral and enduring adversaries. Sources say the actor emerged from a wide-ranging global search for someone capable of capturing Brainiac’s cold intelligence, menace, and unsettling presence.

Gunn confirmed the news himself on social media, writing, “In our worldwide search for Brainiac in ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Lars Eidinger rose to the top. Welcome to the DCU, Lars.”

Man of Tomorrow reunites key creative elements from Superman (2025), with David Corenswet returning as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. The sequel is expected to lean further into character-driven storytelling while expanding the scope of the new DC Universe.

Production is slated to begin in early 2026, with the film currently scheduled for a July 9, 2027, theatrical release.

A longtime fan favorite across comics, animation, and television, Brainiac has remained one of the most requested villains yet to make the jump to the big screen. Eidinger’s casting signals DC Studios’ continued commitment to bold creative choices while honoring the legacy of its most iconic characters.
