The Beverly Hills Police Department has released a media alert that Jackie Avant, the wife of iconic music executive Clarence Avant, was killed during a Beverly Hills home invasion on Tuesday night. She was 81.

According to the media release, the Beverly Hills Police communications center received a phone call at 2:23 a.m. in response to a shooting that had just occurred on the 1100 block of Maytor Place.

When police units arrived, they discovered Mrs. Avant, whom is not named in the report, with a gunshot wound. BH Fire Department paramedics transported her to a local hospital, but she did not survive. Husband Clarence was not injured.

Jacqueline Alberta Gray, but known as “Jackie,” was a former Ebony Fashion Fair model. She worked for the Neighbors of Watts as president. Avant also served as an entertainment chairman for the benefit auction and dinner dance, NOW. In 1974, she was also chairman of NOW membership. She was also on the UCLA board for the International Student Center.

She married “The Godfather of Black Music” in 1967 and the couple has been together for more than 50 years, The Avants have two children, former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas Nicole, 53, and Alexander Du Bois Avant, 50. Nicole is married to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
