There’s nothing but good feelings for Inside Out 2 at the box office. The Pixar Animation Studios film, which revisits the mind of Riley as she navigates the turbulent emotions of her teenage years, has now become the highest-grossing film of the year domestically. Remarkably, it achieved this milestone in just eight days.

Adding to its impressive feat, Inside Out 2 crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office on Friday. These achievements come on the heels of a record-breaking opening weekend for the film. Last weekend, the animated film boasted the biggest box office opening of the year and secured the second-biggest animated box office opening of all time domestically, trailing only behind another Pixar gem, 2018’s Incredibles 2.

Globally, Inside Out 2 shattered records by delivering the biggest global animated opening of all time when adjusted for current exchange rates and comparable markets.

Critics and audiences alike have warmly received Pixar’s latest. The film is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with accolades for its stunning visuals, talented cast, and inventive storytelling. It also garnered an “A” CinemaScore and boasts a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 96%.

Pete Docter, Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and the director of the original Inside Out from 2015, reflected on the enduring impact of the first film. He noted, “The first film has continued to be part of the conversation since it opened nearly a decade ago, leading to the creation of the sequel.”

Docter elaborated on the lasting influence of Inside Out, sharing, “We hear from people saying, ‘This movie changed the way I think about parenting,’ or ‘The way I understand my own existence,’ and that’s pretty heavy for a cartoon. Maybe there’s more to be done with this world?” Inspired by this feedback, Docter and his team decided to explore further. They tapped Kelsey Mann to direct Inside Out 2, encouraging him to build on the themes of the first movie while taking the story in a new direction.

Inside Out 2 continues to charm audiences and dominate the box office, reaffirming Pixar’s reputation for delivering emotionally resonant and visually spectacular films. As Riley faces the complexities of adolescence, viewers are reminded of the rich tapestry of emotions that define the human experience, making Inside Out 2 not just a box office triumph but a poignant continuation of a beloved story.
