Seattle-based independent agency Hydrogen Advertising has promoted Tim O’Neill from associate creative director to creative director.

In his expanded role, O’Neill will continue leading creative and account work while collaborating on new business efforts alongside Hydrogen co-owner and Chief Creative Officer Michael McGrath.

O’Neill’s path into advertising began in an unexpected place: songwriting.

Before moving into copywriting, he worked with recording artists to help shape creative ideas into songs, eventually recognizing the overlap between writing for performers and writing for brands.

For O’Neill, both disciplines come down to connection.

Songwriting creates a bridge between artists and fans. Copywriting does the same between brands and audiences.

That philosophy has informed a career in advertising spanning more than two decades.

O’Neill previously worked with agencies including BreadnButter, Dentsu and WPP before moving into freelance work. A project with Hydrogen ultimately turned into something more permanent.

“Getting an opportunity to work with Mary [Knight, president of Hydrogen Advertising] and Michael has been a breath of fresh air,” O’Neill said. “The freedom those two have given me to explore and grow has made all the difference.”

McGrath said O’Neill’s creative skills, work ethic and collaborative style made the promotion a natural next step.

“His background certainly gives him the knowledge and talent that makes his creativity a great fit with Hydrogen, but moreover, his work ethic and amicability shine through his work with our team and clients,” McGrath noted. “He has more than earned this Creative Director position.”

Outside the agency, O’Neill is still writing songs.

He is currently finishing a record with his high school best friend, a project that’s been in the making for five years.

REEL 360 News wishes Tim the best of luck in his new role.
