The investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death has taken a new turn, with authorities reportedly examining whether the actress died after taking an oxycodone pill that may have been laced with fentanyl.
Panettiere, best known for Heroes and Nashville, died August 16 at age 36 while staying at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Her official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, and toxicology results remain pending.
According to multiple reports citing law-enforcement sources, investigators believe Panettiere may have obtained black-market prescription medication from a longtime dealer in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina.
Authorities are reportedly working on the theory that one of those pills – believed to have been oxycodone – contained fentanyl and was taken on the morning of her death. The DEA is involved in tracing the possible source of the drugs, but no official toxicology finding has yet confirmed fentanyl as the cause of death.
Panettiere was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest on August 16.
According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, first responders arrived shortly after a 911 call at approximately 1:51 p.m. and began advanced cardiac life support measures. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
An autopsy performed the following day found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. “The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies,” the coroner’s office said.

The case has since expanded beyond the local investigation.
Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, who was at the residence when she died, has spoken with federal investigators as the DEA and local authorities pursue information about the possible source of the drugs. Authorities have not identified him as a suspect.
Earlier dispatch audio referenced a possible overdose while CPR was being performed, but investigators have repeatedly stressed that the official cause of death remains unresolved pending toxicology testing.
Panettiere had spoken publicly in the past about her struggles with addiction and recovery, including in her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
Her career began as a child actor before she rose to wider fame as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes. She later earned two Golden Globe nominations for playing Juliette Barnes on Nashville and appeared in films including Remember the Titans, Scream 4 and Scream VI.
She is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya.
For now, the fentanyl-laced pill remains an investigative theory — not an official cause of death. That distinction is important until the coroner completes the toxicology review.
