Everything, Top Gun, Menu nominated for WGA Screenplay Awards

Coming on the heels of yesterday’s Oscar nominations, the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) and Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting during 2022.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, Top Gun: Maverick, Women Talking and The Fabelmans are among the films nominated in the film categories for the 75th annual awards and in the Adapted Screenplay Category the guild nominated Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Top Gun: Maverick and Women Talking, along with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and She Said.

The very twisted dark horror comedy, The Menu and Jordan Peele’s Nope were also nominated in the Original category.

Disqualified scripts include The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness in the original category and Living and All Quiet on the Western Front. All were nominated for Oscars. In adapted. Aftersun, Empire of Light, The Whale and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio were among the other scripts not eligible for a Writers Guild Award nomination.

The scripts were disqualified from competition because they were not written under the WGA Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of the Writers Guild of Canada, Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, Writers Guild of Ireland, Writers’ Guild of South Africa, New Zealand Writers Guild, Film Writers’ Association (India), La Guilde Francaise des Scénaristes (France), Scriptwriters Guild of Israel, Société des Auteurs de Radio, Télévision et Cinéma (Québec), or Verband Deutscher Drehbuchautoren (VDD/Germany), collectively known as affiliate Guilds.

In the WGA’s documentary screenplay category, the nominees were 2nd Chance, Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, Last Flight Home, Moonage Daydream and Viva Maestro!
