Emmys: Beatles and Sandy Hook win big on Night One of Creative Arts Awards

Creative Arts

On Saturday, The Television Academy presented the first of its two 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies honoring outstanding artistic and technical achievements in television at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

In what looked more like the VMAs or the Grammys, the ceremony, which kicked off the 74th Emmys, awarded many talented artists and craftspeople in genres including animation, reality, documentary/nonfiction and variety programming.

The Beatles: Get Back and Adele: One Night Only won five awards apiece during the first of the two-night presentation.

The Beatles: Get Back handed two Emmys to Peter Jackson, for directing an outstanding documentary. “Shout out to the Beatles,” gushed Jackson, who also won three Oscars for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Jackson is now halfway there to EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status.

Adele: One Night Only’s five awards included outstanding pre-recorded variety special. Adele is now just a Tony away from achieving EGOT status with the win.

BBDO New York and client Sandy Hook continue their dominance in awards shows as they picked up another Emmy for their campaign, this time Teenage Dream where school shooting victims sing Katie Perry’s song.

RuPaul won an Emmy for RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul is now the most honored person of color in Emmy history, with a total of 12 wins and seven consecutive wins for outstanding host.

Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous Emmy for his voice performance as T’Challa in Disney+ series What If…? Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted, saying, “What a beautifully aligned moment it really is that one of the last things he would work on would not only be revisiting a character that was so important to him and his career and to the world, but also that it be an exploration of something new, diving into a new potential future.”

Barack Obama won his first Emmy, for narrating the Netflix docuseries Our Great National Parks. With two Grammy wins, the former president is now halfway to EGOT.

Riot Games and Netflix’s animated series Arcane received four Emmys, including animated series and three juried awards. The streamer’s Love on the Spectrum also nabbed three.

The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show also came away a big winner for three Emmys, while

Programs that won two Emmys include A Black Lady Sketch Show, Drag Race, Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Luci and Desi and the Love Death + Robots episode “Jibaro” (including one juried award).
