Dances Films

The 27th Annual Dances With Films: LA has announced its film lineup for this year’s festival, running from June 20 to June 30, marking its most extensive program to date. As Los Angeles’ premier independent film festival, it will feature a remarkable 232 films, including 34 world premieres of narrative and documentary features.

This edition also introduces a new co-presenting partnership with Outfest for LGBTQIA+ programming and an expanded Midnight Horror and Genre section.

Festival founders Leslee Scallon and Michael Trent expressed their enthusiasm for this year’s festival, highlighting the imaginative and entertaining nature of the showcased works. They stated, “This year’s lineup is another perfect example of wonderful, imaginative, challenging, and always entertaining work: narrative features, documentaries, pilots, shorts, and music videos that rarely have stars in their casts and almost never have big production companies footing the bill. We’re thrilled to be the film festival that introduces them to audiences and industry in the heart of Hollywood.”

The festival will open with the world premiere of Mahesh Pailoor’s heartfelt drama Paper Flowers. The film follows the poignant journey of a USC graduate and Peace Corps volunteer whose life is disrupted by a cancer diagnosis. The cast includes Kapil Talwalkar, Olivia Liang, Karan Soni, Faran Tahir, Meera Simhan, and Tom Everett Scott.

Closing the festival is Terre Weisman’s Max Dagan, another world premiere. This drama tells the story of a man racing to free his terminally ill father from prison by uncovering the truth behind a tragic incident. The impressive cast includes Rob MorrowZachary GordonMichael MadsenRob BrownsteinLindsey DresbachLisa Roumain, and Jay Mohr.

This year’s lineup includes 117 films making world, international, North American, or U.S. premieres. Among these are several narrative features like Addy Daddy by Patrick VanZandt, Almost Popular by Nayip Anthony Garcia, America’s Next Top Immigrant by Benjamin-Shalom Rodriguez, and Anxious by Nida Chowdhry.

Anxious

The documentary section will premiere films such as A Little Hope for Chicago by Leon Lozano, A School Grows in Watts by Ryan S. Porush, and Spyral by Oscar-winner Bill Guttentag.

Midnight Horror and Genre

The festival’s Midnight Horror and Genre section includes premieres like Kevin Mix’s Death Perception, Matt Warren’s Delicate Arch, and Jeff Wolfe’s Mourning Rock.

In the LGBTQIA+ programming, co-presented with Outfest, notable entries include Regarding Us by David Beck and Jennifer Bobbi, and Almost Popular by Nayip Anthony Garcia.

The Downbeat and Kidz sections will highlight music, dance, and family-friendly content, with films such as Dance As You Are by Eryl Cochran, which was filmed almost entirely on iPhones.

One of the notable Southern California premieres is Stimson Snead’s Tim Travers & The Time Travelers Paradox, featuring a star-studded cast including Samuel Dunning, Felicia Day, Joel McHale, Danny Trejo, and Keith David. The documentary section also features significant premieres such as Norita, executive produced by Jane Fonda, and Saving Jones by Rebecca Cory, which focuses on advocating for pit bulls.

Dances With Films is also known for its short films and television/streaming pilots. This year includes Russell Goldman’s Burn Out, executive produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, and Danny Farber’s Thoughts and Prayers, executive produced by Amy Poehler. Among the pilots, Ada by Elizabeth Cox and Kirill Yeretsky, and Popped by Noah Benjamin Miller stand out.
