
The 50th Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) Awards brought recognition to some of the most celebrated films and talents of 2024. At the center of the honors was Sean Baker’s Anora, which claimed the prestigious Best Picture award.
The film also earned runner-up recognition for Baker in the Best Director and Best Screenplay categories, further solidifying its acclaim.
The awards, announced ahead of the January 11, 2025 ceremony at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, also celebrated standout performances. Mikey Madison, the star of Anora, shared the Best Leading Performance honor with Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths. Yura Borisov (Anora) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) were recognized with Best Supporting Performance awards.
LAFCA honored Mohammad Rasoulof (The Seed of the Sacred Fig) with the Best Director award, with Sean Baker as the runner-up. Jesse Eisenberg won Best Screenplay for A Real Pain, while Nickel Boys earned Best Cinematography for Jomo Fray and tied for Best Editing, shared by Nicholas Monsour (Nickel Boys) and Hansjörg Weißbrich (September 5).
Other winners included Judy Becker (The Brutalist) for Best Production Design and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Challengers) for Best Music Score. In animation, Flow secured the Best Animation award, and All We Imagine as Light won Best Film Not in English Language.
The New Generation Award went to Vera Drew for The People’s Joker, and Eduardo Williams earned the Douglas Edwards Experimental Film Prize for The Human Surge 3. Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter was announced as the recipient of this year’s Career Achievement Award.
