Angus Wall directs new Eddie Murphy doc for Netflix

Being Eddie

Netflix has debuted Being Eddie, a feature-length documentary from two-time Academy Award winner and MakeMake founder Angus Wall, offering an unusually intimate look at the life and legacy of Eddie Murphy. The film premieres globally on November 12.

Wall brings unprecedented access to Murphy’s personal reflections, charting his rise from a 17-year-old stand-up sharing the stage with Jerry Seinfeld, to his breakout on Saturday Night Live, and through the next five decades as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and influential performers. The result is a portrait built on honesty, humor, and the kind of candor Murphy rarely shares publicly. Watch the trailer below:

MakeMake’s Will Znidaric served as lead editor, with additional editing by Chris Mitchell. Color was handled by Ale Amato and finishing by the studio’s VFX team.

Produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Terry Leonard, and Kent Kubena, Being Eddie spans the full spectrum of Murphy’s career, from his Oscar-nominated role in Dreamgirls to his cultural touchstone performances in films like Coming to America and his iconic turn as Donkey in Shrek.

The film also includes appearances from an extensive list of collaborators and admirers, including Arsenio Hall, Brian Grazer, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jerry Seinfeld, John Landis, Kenan Thompson, Kevin Hart, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Ruth Carter, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Tracy Morgan.

“There’s just nobody like Eddie Murphy,” Wall says. “He’s funny, he’s an icon, and he’s a blueprint for how to be in the world. I’m excited for people to experience him in this film, and grateful for how generous he—and everyone—has been.”

With Being Eddie, Wall and the MakeMake team continue their commitment to emotionally resonant, craft-driven storytelling — this time centered on a once-in-a-generation talent whose impact continues to shape comedy and film.

Being Eddie is streaming now.
