Andy Serkis to play Alfred in Reeves ‘The Batman’

Wow. Gollum (or for those of you who just remember Andy Serkis as Ulysses S. Klaw) is going to play faithful butler Alfred in director Matt Reeves’ (War of the Planet the Apes, Cloverfield) upcoming The Batman.

Gollum. My Precious. We kid. Andy Serkis (Black Panther) is an amazing talent and should add gravitas to the already star-studded cast that is being put together for Bruce Wayne’s latest adventures in Gotham.

Serkis joins The Lighthouse’s Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler and Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Commissioner James Gordon.

Colin Farrell in talks to play Penguin

This is definitely a head-scratcher. You almost wonder if someone got the casting specs twisted between Serkis and Farrell. But it is true. According to the trades, the Irish actor, known for Daredevil, Phone Booth and Dumbo, is currently in serious negotiations to round out The Batman’s trio of villains as Oswald Cobblepot.

Farrell is a versatile actor and it will be interesting to see his take on The Penguin, who has gained popularity from the Arkham Asylum video games and the Fox series, Gotham.

Variety’s Justin Kroll notes that Harvey Dent is the next major role expected to be cast, and that someone from the cast of HBO’s Succession had initially been approached.

In a Tweet, he says, “a certain member of the “Roy Family” was asked to play the Dent role but they ended up passing.”

Matt Reeves is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin (Little Fish). Production is expected to commence at the end of 2019 or early 2020.

The Batman hits theaters June 25, 2021.
