International Film Fest

Andre Royo spent a minute with Reel Chicago on the red carpet for Beautiful Boy during the Chicago International Film Festival last week.

The actor who gained millions of fans during seven seasons on The Wire plays the role of Spencer in the much buzzed-about film by Belgian Director Felix Van Gueringen, which launched the 2018 program at AMC River East on October 10.

According to IMDb, Beautiful Boy “chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.”

Starring Steve Carrell, Timothée Chalamet, and Maura Tierney, Beautiful Boy has inspired more than one critic to describe its profound impact and instant Oscar worthiness. The film is based on the published memoirs of David and Nic Sheff, the real life father and son who lived through the story

In the film, Royo plays Spencer, the drug treatment sponsor to Nic, the teenage son dealing with addiction played by Chalamet.

Although the actor shrugged off our praise for Beautiful Boy’s success and insisted that the credit belongs to the main cast, he still made an excellent representative for the film.

While offering profound insight about the gravity of the theme, Royo maintained an upbeat level of charisma that made for one of the most enjoyable interviews of the festival. He referred to his personal life and professional experience throughout the conversation, and took special joy in describing the inspiration that he gets from two people in particular: his mother and his daughter.
