The American Film Institute (AFI) announced that the World Premiere of the Apple Original film Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me will open the 36th edition of AFI FEST on Wednesday, November 2.
After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light.
The documentary is helmed by Alek Keshishian, who made his groundbreaking directorial debut with the seminal documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare.
“I had no interest in making a traditional pop doc,” says Keshishian. “I wanted to show something more authentic and Selena did, too. She has a raw vulnerability that captured me… I had no idea then that it would become a six-year labor of love.”
“AFI is proud to launch AFI FEST 2022 with Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me a film as profoundly powerful as it is personal,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “Selena is a global force in art and entertainment, and we are honored to partner with her, Alek and Apple to shine a light upon her journey in this beautifully crafted celebration of optimism, vulnerability and hopefulness.”
Fablemans to Close AFI FEST
The U.S. premiere of Universal Pictures’ and Amblin Entertainment’s The Fablemans, directed by AFI Life Achievement Award recipient and Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg, will close AFI FEST 2022.
The film is co-written by Spielberg and Academy Award-nominated and Pulitzer-winning playwright Tony Kushner and is produced by Academy Award nominee Kristie Macosko Krieger, Spielberg and Kushner.
Now in its 36th year, AFI FEST 2022 will take place exclusively in person in Los Angeles from November 2-6. Tickets and passes to AFI FEST 2022 will be available in October on FEST.AFI.com.
Gomez can currently be seen in Hulu Only Murders in the Building and HBO Max’s Selena + The Chef.
