The Writers Guild of America, East and West announced the election results of their 2019 Council election.

While running unopposed, incumbent Beau Willimon (House of Cards), who represents the Unity Slate in the East, was re-elected president of the WGA East.

Goodman re-elected in landslide victory

Three days earlier, David A. Goodman (Futurama, Family Guy) was re-elected president of the WGA West, defeating opposition candidate Phyllis Nagy (Carol) in a landslide victory.

His re-election, in a record turnout, is a solid endorsement of the guild’s five-month-long agency campaign, which was the main issue in the race. The victory also strengthens the guild’s hand going into next year’s negotiations with management’s AMPTP for a new film and TV contract.

Goodman received 4,395 votes (77.3%) to Nagy’s 1,292 (22.7%). All of Goodman’s running mates were also elected.

Marjorie David, running unopposed – after Craig Mazin and Carl Gottlieb dropped out of the race – was elected vice president, and Michele Mulroney was elected secretary-treasurer. She defeated Nick Jones, Jr., who received 1,256 votes, and Evette Vargas, who got 203.

The following members were elected to serve as Officers: President – David A. Goodman (inc.); Vice President – Marjorie David (inc.); Secretary-Treasurer – Michele Mulroney.

The following eight members were elected to the WGAW’s Board of Directors for two-year terms, effective immediately: Liz Alper, Angelina Burnett (inc.), Robb Chavis, Dante W. Harper, Zoe Marshall, Luvh Rakhe (inc.), Meredith Stiehm (inc.), Nicole Yorkin (inc.). *Editor’s Note: (inc) denotes incumbent.

NUMERICAL VOTING RESULTS

President: David A. Goodman (4,395), Phyllis Nagy (1,282).

Vice President: Marjorie David (4,708).

Secretary-Treasurer: Michele Mulroney (4,164), Nick Jones, Jr. (1,256), Evette Vargas (203).

Board of Directors: Meredith Stiehm (4,115), Luvh Rakhe (4,000), Liz Alper (3,967), Angelina Burnett (3,960), Nicole Yorkin (3,874), Zoe Marshall (3,819), Robb Chavis (3,679), Dante W. Harper (3,628), Marc Guggenheim (1,488), Sarah Treem (1,476), Nicholas Kazan (1,462), Courtney A. Kemp (1,418), Jason Fuchs (1,270), Rasheed Newson (1,255), Ayelet Waldman (1,203), Ashley Edward Miller (1,160), Mike Mariano (715).

A total of 5,809 valid ballots were cast. Representing 58% of eligible voters (9,988), this turnout is the largest in Guild history and more than doubles the previous record turnout of 2,475 in the 2018 Board of Directors election.

Goodman had this to say to Deadline about his re-election:

“This vote shows that writers have overwhelmingly given me and the leadership a mandate to continue the strategy we’ve been pursuing. Seventy-five percent of the vote in this huge turnout really says a lot about how writers are feeling about this (agency) campaign. What’s interesting to me too is that my opponents ran on a platform that said that they agreed with the goals, if not the strategy, and so I think that means that across the board, our membership wants us to try to fix this situation with the agencies. So it’s a strong mandate – not just for me, but for the candidates that I ran with, and we’re going to continue to pursue the strategy.

Congratulations to both incumbents from Reel 360 who supports the Unity Slate.
