So Gatorade, TBWA\Chiat\Day LA and Gizmo have gone all kinds of Pixar on their target. And that’s not a bad thing. In fact, in the new emotionally packed animated short film, Heart of a Lio, which tells the tale of and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi, it’s a very good thing.
Messi is one of the world’s most decorated players, coming off another successful season with his club team as La Liga champions. This summer, Messi has the opportunity to do the one thing he’s never done with his home country: take home the World Cup for Argentina. Gatorade has always looked at the soul of the player, always asking what drives them internally.
Perfect match!
Created by TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles, the four-minute film, directed by Ema Verruno, Flamboyant Paradise (duo Javier Lourenço and Antoine Quairiat) and Nico Presas as directors, tells the story of Messi from babyhood, when he kicks away his tears, to his boyhood in Argentina, where he shows early promise but suffers a big setback after being told he has a growth defect.
However, he is visited by an adult vision of himself who tells him not to give up on his dreams. He goes to on play for Barcelona, but has both ups and downs on his way to becoming a top player; at one point, the child version of himself appears and reminds him to keep dreaming big.
The theme of the film is an internal mantra Messi has never forgotten: “If you have a dream to chase, nothing can stop you.”

The film truly is emotionally-packed and epic. The agency should consider entering it in film festivals.
