Mercury in Retrograde shuts down Facebook, Instagram and more

Facebook
(Was it Mercury in Retrograde?)

If you have tried to feed your social media Monday morning addiction by checking in on Facebook or posting weekend brunch, beach or beer photos on Instagram, chances are you are feeling a bit disappointed. The Facebook app, along with Messenger, Instagram, Oculus VR and What’s App suddenly went down.

Time to shake your fist and curse Mercurya. Or at maybe something more sinister.

Instagram.com is flashing a 5xx Server Error message, while the Facebook site tells us that something went wrong. The problem also appears to be affecting its virtual reality arm, Oculus.

According to CNBC, it happened just as Facebook’s Director and Head of Global Security, Antigone Davis, was defending the company over a whistleblower’s accusations and its handling of research data suggesting Instagram is harmful to teens.

On Twitter, Facebook communications exec Andy Stone says, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

REELated: Latest TikTok Challenge milks the stupidity of humanity

According to  Down Detector, the problems are widespread. While Facebook has not given a reason why the platforms are down, their DNS (Domain Name System) records show that may be the issue.

Users reportedly can still load games they already have installed and the browser works, but social features or installing new games does not.

There’s no word yet from Facebook about when the sites will be back up. In the meantime, guess we will have to treat Mondays like the good ‘ol days and get to work.

Damn you, Mercury in Retrograde
