Dear President Biden, give women hope. Step down now.

Biden

Dear President Biden,

Can we call you “Joe”? For the eight years, you served as vice president in the Obama administration, and the almost four years you have been president, we have admired your heart and dedication. We even nicknamed you our “Captain America” (which as a comic book geek is the highest compliment) because of the loyalty, courage, and strength you’ve shown our country.

We know how important family is to you, and how much you value democracy and our nation’s ideals. When you stepped aside in July, it was a bittersweet moment for many of us. It was sad to see you leave the race, but we understood—it was time to let the future take its rightful place. You know what it’s like to have others’ backs. You’re from Philly adjacent how could you not?

But now, with the election behind us, we’re asking you to consider one final, selfless act, Cap: Step down now and allow Kamala Harris to pick up the shield.

Radical? Stupid? Naive? Maybe all of the above. But…

Imagine, just for a moment, stepping aside in these final two months, and allowing Kamala to become the first female president of the United States. This act, though brief, would be monumental. It would not only honor the legacy of progress you’ve championed but reaffirm the promise that every American, regardless of gender or race, can aspire to lead our nation. Kamala, as the first woman, first Black, and first South Asian vice president, represents so many Americans who, until now, have only imagined themselves in that role.

Sixty-eight million Americans are hurting. Women are hurting. Our daughters are hurting. Kamala’s loss (and in 2016, Hilary Clinton) is a profound disappointment for those who felt she embodied progress, diversity, and a shared hope for an inclusive future. Allowing her to serve as president, even briefly, would send a message that speaks to the heart of our democracy’s evolution.

You have often said we are a country that’s always striving toward our ideals of equality and representation. By passing the torch to Kamala now, you would illuminate that truth, inviting future generations to see the presidency as not just a possibility but an expectation for women everywhere.

Picture what this would mean for America’s daughters, granddaughters, and every young girl looking to the highest office. They would witness firsthand that the highest glass ceiling is not beyond their reach—especially when leaders like you have helped break it down. Such a defining moment would transcend politics; it would echo across history.

Beyond this, you’ve appointed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, quite possibly the last liberal justice we may see appointed for a generation. This critical choice will stand as a cornerstone of your legacy, underscoring your commitment to balance and fairness in the justice system. By giving Kamala this opportunity, you further honor the values you’ve upheld—values that put justice, inclusion, and the promise of equality at the heart of America’s future.

Kamala has already served briefly as acting president during your medical procedure, showing her readiness and resolve. By giving her this opportunity now, you would allow her legacy, and yours, to grow as beacons of inclusivity, resilience, and courage.

The world would see that America stands firmly behind those who lead with compassion and conviction—traits that Kamala has embodied alongside you. This is a moment, Joe, where you can amplify your legacy as a leader who not only served his nation but empowered others to lead with strength, compassion, and courage.

Don’t consider our suggestion as a way to give it to Trump and the red states one last time. Don’t consider our suggestion as a way to throw off the media.

Consider our suggestion to do what you have always done – offer hope.
