Summary
The Civic Media Manager for Free Spirit Media leads the organizations’ out-of-school time media arts & journalism programs, which provide underrepresented emerging media-makers ages 14-25 with professional development, production and skills training, community journalism, mentorship and work-placed opportunities.
FSM News West & South are media arts and journalism after school programs that provide high school participants with the opportunity to gain skills in camera operation, audio recording, performance, writing, video editing and photography. FSM News is based at two media labs on Chicago’s West and South sides.
Real Chi Youth is an experimental “learning newsroom” in North Lawndale for young adults interested in learning to produce high-quality, solutions-oriented, community journalism on the job. Our journalists learn to use new media technology to interrupt and transform the one-note news coverage that Chicago’s West and South sides receive.

The Civic Media Manager for Free Spirit Media plays a key role in driving program design and execution, partner engagement and strategic alliances, and participant engagement and advocacy. The ideal candidate should have a familiarity with the local journalism landscape; a background in media education, particularly with youth & young adults; and a strong interest in creative workforce development. The Civic Media Manager connects participants, partners, mentors and employers, playing the role of advocate. To be successful, the Civic Media Manager needs to be a well-organized, dynamic project manager and passionate youth advocate, who balances relationship building with mentors and young people, while developing, executing and evaluating innovative, impactful programs with community and organizational partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 Oversee and execute the development and implementation of program vision, portfolio, and model for growth, determining staffing, budget and program activities
 Continue to align programs with existing Free Spirit Media programs’ curriculum and programmatic strategic goals, seeking opportunities for collaboration with all program staff
 Provide oversight and guidance to ensure consistency of program delivery and facilitation reflecting best practices across all programs through the following: logic and program model reflecting, best practices in youth development, professional development practices, completion of program plans, partner meetings, and program evaluation oversight
 Lead ongoing development of the evaluation model, tools and systems for programs, overseeing the ongoing collection and management of all data to align with strategic priorities and funding requirements
 Maintain and improve participant and mentor database and tracking systems, ensuring documentation of participant and mentor engagement and progression
 Build and maintain relationships with industry professionals to leverage mentorship and entry level & apprenticeship positions in media & journalism industries
 Develop and manage partnerships with key programmatic partners and mentors
 Collaborate with other program managers and members of the leadership team to ensure a strong organizational bond
 Monitor and manage staff workload and assess capacity/changes in key responsibilities; meet with the team on a consistent basis to develop programming structure and supports, provide feedback; Set expectations and accountability by creating performance goals and clarifying alignment to strategic organizational goals
 Oversee the implementation of the media arts & journalism initiatives in the strategic plan
 Collaborate on grant proposals, funder reports, and lead partner evaluation strategies
 Represent FSM in external settings to other organizations through conferences, workshops, and community events
 Attend all quarterly leadership, technology, and manager team meetings to support the development of strategic organizational goals, grant outcomes, technology processes, and youth council events
 Support the production of high quality media projects
 Position and promote work for distribution and dissemination among audiences
 Encourage and amplify the social media presence of FSM, its programs and content
 Develop and pursue strategies for innovative practice

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
 Bachelor’s degree in journalism and/or education or comparable professional experience
 5+ years experience working in program development and management
 Experience with journalism, media arts, youth development, and/or social justice organizations preferred
 Experience leading, developing, and supervising a strong team
 Excellent managerial skills, experience working cross-departmentally, and proven track record of building systems and processes for organizational sustainability
 Comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with a variety of journalism and media arts environments
 Passionate about youth and their education and inspiring youth voice and vision
 Experience or interest in engaging and working with youth, primarily ages 14-25
 Excellent people skills working in a diverse team environment

The Communications Coordinator provides strategy and implementation of Free Spirit Media’s print and digital communications, including marketing, PR, and media distribution. The Communications Coordinator will join Free Spirit Media’s Development & Communications department, which works to promote the work of Free Spirit Media and its youth artists; garner financial support for the organization; and build an audience for youth media and organizational projects.
Marketing & PR Responsibilities:
 Produce print and digital marketing collateral, including web and graphic design, to communicate organizational mission and work and support development efforts.
 Manage website and social media platforms, ensuring daily maintenance in collaboration with the Communications Associate.
 Pitch media coverage of Free Spirit Media work and events, centering youth artists and their work, to build awareness, audience engagement, and donor support for the organization.
 Guide strategic alignment of Free Spirit Media brands including direction of FSM social media platforms.
 Support program-specific graphic design and outreach needs.
Media Distribution Responsibilities:
 Lead Free Spirit Media’s staff distribution committee, which works to identify and pursue relevant distribution channels to promote FSM and amplify the youth voices expressed through youth-made media.
 Ensure implementation of the distribution section of Free Spirit Media’s 2020 Vision strategic plan to build audience, deepen impact of media, and train youth in effective media distribution (in collaboration with the distribution committee).
 Contribute to distribution committee efforts related to hosting community screenings or writing curriculum writing (based on skills and interests).
Community Engagement Responsibilities:
 Maintain and pursue relevant partnerships to strengthen FSM’s networks.

Primary Responsibilities:
 Work with Industry Pathways Manager to plan and execute Chicago Track Workshops, Industry Pathways Cohort Training and Flash Forward programs, overseeing recruitment, enrollment, and professional development support services and supporting in program design, event coordination, community and partner engagement and evaluation
 Work with Career Services Coordinator to execute case management strategy to provide support to current members, alumni and fellows pursuing short term and long term employment opportunities and reaching personal and professional goals
 Work with Career Services Coordinator to plan and execute Professional Development workshops (resume, job and interview preparedness, personal pitching) for Industry Pathways, Flash Forward and other FSM programs throughout the year

Media Burn is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that preserves and distributes independent nonfiction video. We are a small crew of creative, dedicated people with a passion for documentary video. To supplement the funding we receive from grants and donations, we offer archival quality video digitization services to the public.

We need an experienced sales person to make direct calls to potential clients at corporations, educational institutions, and archives. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.

Summary
The FSM News West Production Coordinator is a dynamic staff person who is able to work directly with youth to spark creativity, confidence, and leadership through journalism and video production. This staff person is a team player, who can maintain focus, perspective, attitude, and attention to detail in a fast- paced, creative, and youth-driven environment. The Production Coordinator, with support from the Program Coordinator, is responsible for supporting the technical needs and learning for the after school program for participating youth. FSM News West is held at The Nichols Tower on the West Side of Chicago and engages high school aged youth.

FSM News teaches video production and journalism to youth, with a focus on supporting youth in learning the best practices in journalistic reporting, research, and broadcast news. Through production of news packages, PSAs, and full newscasts, youth gain real world skills and begin to use media as a way to tell their story and learn about their community. FSM News West is part of the journalism portfolio, with its counterpart FSM News South and the advanced journalism program, Real Chi Youth.

The FSM News West crew is responsible for the production and packaging of participant newscasts on various distribution platforms, including on CAN TV, YouTube, and partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Program Responsibilities
   · Participate in day-to-day lesson preparation and delivery, including, but not limited to: camera
operations, editing, producing, and reporting
   · Assist and teach youth on site about equipment, trouble-shooting, and production run-down
   · Create and maintain youth development environment where youth receive technical, artistic, social, and emotional support
   · Help plan, oversee, and attend field trips to media and production companies, businesses, organizations, events, etc.

   · Advanced editing skills
   · A minimum of two years video, film, or television experience

This position covers a parental leave. We are looking for a candidate who can fill in from mid-October through early March for up to 32 hours a week. The Deputy Director will partner with the Executive Director to oversee communications, development, operations, and especially programmatic functions for Free Spirit Media.
